GMHC Statement on Proposed Trans Military Ban

President Trump’s assault on the transgender community continues with his renewed calls for a ban on transgender people serving in the military. With more than 6,000 transgender and gender non-conforming Americans proudly serving in our armed forces, the President’s directive denigrates their service and sacrifice. GMHC applauds the two lawsuits filed this week by Lambda Legal/OutServe-SLDN and the ACLU of Maryland that are directly challenging the President’s proposed ban.

“Previous studies have clearly demonstrated that transgender people are fit to serve in the United States military. We hope that the new study about the issue, announced Tuesday by U.S. Secretary of Defense James Mattis, will reach the same conclusion and will allow transgender people to continue to serve and enlist. That is the only fair outcome and the only way to honor every person who serves in uniform.”
